Scoliosis Symptoms and Treatment in Omaha

Scoliosis is characterized by a left to right or right to left curvature of the spine. Most individuals with an abnormal curvature only have one curve, known as a C-curve. If there are two curves, it is known as an S-curve. An initial diagnosis of scoliosis is usually performed with a visual examination. If a possible curve is identified, our Omaha chiropractor may request x-rays in order to confirm the diagnosis and determine the degree of the curvature.

Symptoms of Scoliosis

The symptoms of scoliosis are usually appearance related. The ailment rarely causes back pain. However, it can make individuals with scoliosis more susceptible to back pain and injuries. If you have an abnormal spinal curvature and back pain, the causes of the back pain should be diagnosed by our Omaha chiropractor. Back and neck pain is rarely caused solely by the scoliosis.

Types of Scoliosis

There are four different types of scoliosis, depending on when the individual first developed the abnormal curvature and if any traumatic injuries are suspected to be the cause.

Congenital scoliosis occurs due to abnormal growth of the spine while the baby is still in the womb.

Neuromuscular scoliosis usually develops because of another chronic disease or ailment of the muscles. Common causes of this type of abnormal spinal curvature include spina bifida and cerebral palsy.

Degenerative scoliosis occurs in adults. It is usually brought on by a traumatic injury to the spine or osteoarthritis.

Idiopathic scoliosis does not have a known cause. Family history may play a part. This type of scoliosis usually starts developing between the ages of 9 and 15.

Scoliosis Treatment with our Chiropractor in Omaha

Our chiropractor in Omaha can diagnose your abnormal curvature and recommend a course of treatment to slow its progression. Generally, curves of less than 25 percent only require monitoring. Curves of more than 40 percent may require surgery.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic adjustments can help maximize the range of motion in the vertebrae of the spine to keep the spine flexible and mobile. Adjustments can also help reduce back and leg pain in individuals with degenerative scoliosis.

Corrective Exercises and Stretches

The goal of corrective exercises is to increase the strength of the back and core muscles, which support the spine. Certain stretches can be performed to help keep the spinal joints and soft tissues flexible and mobile. Both of these treatments help reduce back and neck pain.

Bracing is typically recommended for children who have not stopped growing. The custom-fitted braces are designed to hold the spine in place to prevent the abnormal curvature from becoming worse. Braces are typically worn for up to 18 hours a day, every day until the child stops growing.
