Concussions Treatment with Chiropractic Care

Traumatic brain injury also known as a concussion is where there is a violent strike to the head usually caused by a sports injury, a slip and fall, or auto accident injury. This sudden jolt to the brain can cause the brain to slosh around within its spinal fluid that is encased in its cavity known as a skull. Therefore, causing bruising and damage to the blood vessels and nerves. While recovery is possible there still may be post side effects that can plague a person months after. That is where our team at Chiropractic Health Clinic in Omaha can help you find relief.

Signs and Symptoms of Concussions

Self-diagnosing a concussion can be very difficult, if not impossible. There really are no visible signs of a concussion meaning you can’t physically check. Also, sometimes the signs and symptoms do not appear right away and can appear days later. Here are some warning signs of a concussion, if you suspect any of these signs see a doctor right away.

    • Confusion
    • Clumsiness
    • Slurred speech
    • Nausea/Vomiting
    • Balance problems
    • Blurred vision
    • Light sensitivity
    • Sound sensitivity
    • Memory loss
    • Change in personality or behavior

A doctor diagnoses if a concussion has happened or not, once diagnosed the severity is rated into 3 grades. Grade 1 being mild, Grade 2 being moderate and grade 3 severe.

Post-Concussion Syndrome

You may have recovered from your concussion injury, but the effects of the concussion, especially if you have been diagnosed with a moderate to severe concussion can persist months after the incident happened. This is called Post- concussion syndrome. Some signs of post-concussion syndrome are:

    • Constant headaches and migraines
    • Vertigo/dizziness
    • Memory and concentration issues
    • Tinnitus
    • Sensitive to light and sound
    • Unable to sleep/Insomnia
    • Depression/Anxiety
    • Moodiness/irritability

How a Chiropractor Can Help with Concussion

Lasting effects from a concussion can be due to trauma specifically to the brain and tissues that surround it and due to trauma of the upper cervical spine.  When the spine is involved in a head trauma, and it often is, misalignment of the cervical spine can inhibit the proper flow of nervous system information the brain sends to the rest of the body and also the information the body is sending to the brain.  Without this proper communication many different symptoms can arise and create a state of dysfunction.  Not only can the bones in the upper neck impede nervous system function but they can also keep the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord from flowing correctly.  This makes it more difficult for waste and nutrients the brain needs to heal and function properly to circulate.  Chiropractors adjust the bones in the cervical spine, (as well as the rest of the spine if needed), into correct alignment eliminating nervous system dysfunction and restoring proper flow of the cerebral spinal fluid.
