Sports Injury FAQ's

Sports Injury FAQs in Omaha, NE

Sports and outdoor activities are a fun way to get exercise, but sometimes they can lead to injury. If you suffer a sports-related injury, our chiropractors at Chiropractic Health Clinic can help you achieve recovery. Here are some of the most common questions we receive about sports injuries and chiropractic.

How Do Sports Injuries Occur?

Sports injuries are most likely to occur if you are new to the sport in question of if you are not using the appropriate safety equipment. If you push yourself too hard at a physical activity, you can also hurt yourself. Sports injuries are most likely to affect the knees, ankles, shoulders, spine and elbows.

What Kinds of Sports Injuries Can Chiropractic Treat?

You probably think of spinal manipulation when you think of chiropractic care. While it is true that, as chiropractors, we do work primarily on the spine, we can also manually adjust any joint in the body. We can evaluate the functioning of all of your body's joints, and determine what, if any, injuries you may have sustained. Our chiropractors can treat strains, or injuries to the ligaments or muscles surrounding a joint, and sprains, or injuries to the ligaments in a joint. We can also treat tendonitis, stress fractures and all other sports injuries.

How Do Chiropractors Diagnose Sports Injuries?

Our chiropractors will diagnose a sports injury first by discussing the activity that caused the injury, and by performing a physical examination of the joint or body part in question. We also use imaging procedures, like Xrays, MRIs and ultrasounds, to rule out broken bones and pinpoint any soft tissue damage.

Do Chiropractors Use Manipulation to Treat Sports Injuries?

In some cases, yes, we do use manipulation of the joint to treat sports injuries. Our chiropractors will decide on a case-by-case basis whether your sports injury can benefit from joint manipulation.

How Do Chiropractors Treat Sports Injuries?

In addition to manipulation, our chiropractors may recommend a combination of ice and heat, compression and elevation to reduce pain and swelling and promote healing. Depending on the extent and nature of your injury, you may also need to wear a brace or cast.

Should I Rest My Sports Injury?

Chiropractors normally advise that you only rest the injured joint for no more than 48 hours, depending on how bad the injury is. If you rest the injury too long, it could worsen your general condition by encouraging weakness in the injured area.

Of course, you also have to be careful to reintroduce activity at the right time and in the right amount. Our chiropractors can help you choose the right types and amounts of physical activity and guide you as you return to activity, so that you do not reinjure yourself.

Can Sports Injuries Be Prevented?

Yes, most sports injuries can be prevented. If you keep yourself in good shape, warm up and cool down properly, and make use of safety equipment, you can protect yourself from sports injuries.
