A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that alters how your brain functions. Concussions are common amongst children and adult who play contact sports, such as football, but they can happen to anyone who sustains a blow to the head. In some cases, a concussion may also occur when the head and upper body are violently shaken, such as during a car accident. Sometimes, a loss of consciousness may accompany a concussion, but this is not always the case. In fact, you may initially feel okay and only realize after the fact that you have suffered a concussion. Any concussion is a traumatic injury that requires proper care to heal. Our chiropractors in Omaha are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of concussive injuries.
Our Omaha chiropractors are trained to identify and treat concussions. We use a standardized assessment tool known as the Sport Concussion Assessment Tool 3 (SCAT3) for patients aged 13 and older; a modified version (Child SCAT3) is used for evaluating concussions in children aged five to 12 years. SCAT3 takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and is critical to the evaluations, assessment and management of concussions in our patients. A direct blow to the head, neck or face is the typical cause for a concussion. For this reason, patients who have sustained a concussion often have a cervical spine misalignment, too. Our comprehensive diagnostic exams include a complete body assessment to determine the full extent of your injuries. The earlier a concussion and accompanying injuries like a cervical spine misalignment are diagnosed, the more we can do to minimize pain and ensure prompt, complete treatment.
The skull is comprised of 26 bones that fit together like puzzle pieces. Any head injury, including a concussion, can affect how these bones fit together. When the skull bones no longer fit together correctly, this can prevent the brain’s fluid from properly circulating. Symptoms of an untreated concussive injury include headaches, memory problems and brain fog. In some cases, patients may also struggle to focus, experience behavioral issues (common in younger children), and experience feelings of depression. If you also have an accompanying cervical spine misalignment, you may suffer from neck pain, headaches at the base of the skull, and jaw pain. Chiropractic for concussions treats these symptoms by correcting the underlying misalignments.
During an appointment with our Omaha chiropractor, your neck and skull will be adjusted using specialized adjustment techniques. When performed by a trained, experienced chiropractor, these adjustments are a safe, effective treatment option for restoring proper spinal and skull alignment. Most importantly, chiropractic for concussions delivers real pain relief that’s not dependent on medication.
